How to Harness the Power of the Elements: Earth

Earth is regarded as one of the five elements in many spiritual teachings. The others of these are Fire, Air, Water and Spirit.

We are all made of earth and we will all return to it when it is time for us to die and for new life to spring forward.

The earth is 4.54 billion years old and so, in one form or another, are we.

In spiritual traditions Earth is seen as representing solid foundations, fertility, and abundance.

She embodies the Universal spirit of Mother and gives life and nurture to all who respect her.

She represents the north of the sacred circle and demonstrates huge adaptability and resilience.

She was here long before us and she will endure long after we are gone.

In ancient times where spirituality took a less organised form, Mother Earth was honoured with ritual and prayer. This is still the case in many parts of the world, however, it is possible to see that in recent times, following huge increases in planetary population and advances in technology and industry; we may have lost our connection.

There has followed, however, an awakening as to the damaging effects of modern human life and a movement towards renewed respect.

In addition to this, Earth’s ability to respond to changes brought about by the pause in human activity due to the corona virus pandemic has evoked a widespread sense of hope. Pollution reduced, wildlife flourished, and great positive changes were seen in only a matter of months.

When we lose our connection with the element of Earth, we can describe ourselves as feeling ‘ungrounded.’

We become like blossom in the wind with nothing to anchor us and no stable place from which to grow and put down roots.

This leaves us vulnerable.

Think of the ways in which you honour your connection with Earth. As a child, you may have revelled in mud pie or sandcastle making. Many of us feel great comfort from touching a standing stone or walking bare foot in the meadow.

When we are conscious of our connection with Earth we can gaze upward into the pure potentiality of the heavens and remain grounded while our spirits soar.

Try this:

Sit comfortably with your spine straight and feet flat on the floor.

Take your awareness to your breathing

Allow it to slow and deepen

Begin to feel a stillness settle over you

As you focus on your breath

Now imagine roots emerging from the soles of your feet

And reaching down deeply into the earth.

Feel the connection

Notice the flow of energy between you

Your connection to the earth

And to every other living thing

Now take your awareness to the crown of your head

Imagine a fine, glistening silver thread

Right in the centre

Reaching up into the heavens

Connecting you with the entire cosmos

Feel the connection

Notice the flow of energy

The sun, planets moons and stars

And everything beyond

Your unbreakable connection to the Universe

And its boundless potential

Now feel the abundance of energy

That is yours

If you can be open to receive it

Set you intention to receive all that is yours

Gently bring yourself back to full awareness

If you like this please share it. Thank you.
